This course covers the key aspects of Oracle database management, enabling every database and/or system administrator to perform basic database management tasks.

  • To describe the functionality of the Oracle RDBMS.
  • The storage methods available for storing data in an Oracle database.
  • How to set up a database environment and create a database structure.
  • To manage the security of an Oracle database, including user management and their permissions.
  • The available backup and recovery strategies.

  • Overview of Oracle Architecture: the Oracle instance, memory structures, supporting background processes, database structure and files, user and server processes.
  • Use of undo segments, implementation of locking, and read consistency.
  • Possible server configurations.
  • Storage Management in an Oracle Database: tablespaces, segments, extents, and blocks; Oracle Managed Files; performance aspects, fragmentation, and related issues; partitioning options; table management; index management.
  • Setting up an Oracle database environment, installing the data dictionary, and using it.
  • Creating and managing additional tablespaces and undo segments.
  • Introduction to Backup and Recovery: full offline backups and the use of export and import tools.
  • Security and management of users, their quotas within the database, and their permissions.
  • System and object privileges, database roles, and password management.

Prior knowledge

Basic knowledge of SQL at the level of the course Oracle: Working with SQL is required.
